FLORENCE, Ala. - Hard economic times did not prevent filmmakers and screenwriters from submitting their work for consideration by the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival. One hundred sixty-eight films and screenplays were submitted between May, when the festival began taking submissions, and the Oct. 15 final deadline. The festival is now in the process of making final selections of films to screen at the 2010 festival and compete for prizes in a variety of categories.
The 2010 George Lindsey UNA Film Festival is the first to include screenwriting in the festival competition, and festival organizers are very pleased with the number of entries: 32 feature screenplays and 13 short screenplays. Also notable are the six films submitted by Shoals area filmmakers to another new category of competition, The Shoals Spotlight. The 13th annual George Lindsey UNA Film Festival will be held March 4-7 in Florence. Special guests of the 2010 festival will include actors Lea Thompson, James Tolkan and Marc McClure, who are joining screenwriter Bob Gale for the 25th Anniversary "Back to the Future" Reunion, scheduled for 7 p.m. March 5 at the historic Shoals Theatre. Tickets to the reunion can be purchased at www.lindseyfilmfest.com or at the UNA Bookstore. The George Lindsey UNA Film Festival is one of the few film festivals hosted by a university. The event was founded in 1998 in part by UNA alumnus and celebrated actor and entertainer George Lindsey. Lindsey's own film career has included several important roles, including the character Goober Pyle on "The Andy Griffith Show."
