Two UNA Students Win Design Competition for W.C. Handy Music FestivalFLORENCE, Ala. - Two students of the University of North Alabama created the winning entry for the 2011 W.C. Handy Music Festival design competition. Their logo is the visual image of the 2011 and is being used on posters, brochures, billboards and pamphlets to represent the music festival. The students are Chrissie Daily, of Cherokee, and Arielle Jones, of Mount Juliet, Tenn. Daily was an honors student at UNA and graduated this spring with a degree in biology. She will attend medical school at the University of South Alabama in the fall. Jones is working toward her degree in English with a concentration in professional writing. "One of the criteria of the competition is that the design must be effective at any size. Chrissie and Arielle have done that," said Nancy Gonce, executive director of the Music Preservation Society. "Their design will look great on the side of a road as a billboard. Yet, it also works on small items such as buttons and pamphlets." The design was created as an assignment in an Honors computing course taught at UNA by Ron Davis, assistant professor of computing information systems. Students from this course submitted the winning design for the 2010 festival, as well. "All of the entries were very good this year," Davis said. "There were several that easily could have been selected and would have represented the festival well. While I am particularly proud of the work done by Chrissie and Arielle, I think everyone that created a submission should be pleased with their efforts." "It's exciting for us to hear that, for two years in a row, a team including UNA Honors Program students has won the Handy Design contest. We're extremely proud of Chrissie Daily's contributions to the winning design. Nancy Gonce and her staff do a tremendous job each year of putting on the Handy Festival, and the Honors Program is pleased to support this top-flight community event," said Dr. Vince Brewton, director of the UNA Honors Program. The Honors Program at UNA is an academically selective four-year experience open to all majors. For more information or to apply, visit oefg.xt23z.com/honors.
